Build a Newsletter Knowledge Base with Cluing πŸ“š

Stop losing valuable newsletter insights. Build a personal knowledge base from the ideas, frameworks, and lessons you want to remember.

Written by Gordana Laskovic

You probably read more newsletters than you can remember. Industry insights, expert opinions, useful frameworks, and ideas you want to come back to later - they all arrive in your inbox every week.

The problem is that most of those insights disappear. They get buried under new emails, saved in folders you never open, or forgotten the moment you close the tab.

With Cluing, you can turn your favorite newsletters into a growing knowledge base. Create a Topic for the areas you care about, send newsletters directly there, and keep the ideas worth remembering - organized, connected, and easy to find when you need them.

Instead of just reading and moving on, you build a library of insights that grows with every newsletter you follow. πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

Your Inbox Isn't Built for Knowledge

Your inbox is great for receiving information. It's not great for building knowledge.

It sorts things by when they arrived, not by what they mean to you. So:

  • Search only helps if you remember the exact word. You saved something about "retention," but now you're hunting for "churn" - and it's nowhere.

  • Everything blurs together. A newsletter from three years ago sits right next to yesterday's, with no hint of what's still worth your time.

  • Related ideas never meet. Two newsletters might say brilliant, complementary things about the same topic, and your inbox will never introduce them.

  • You can't save just the good part. It's the whole email or nothing, never the one paragraph that actually made you stop and think.

Cluing fixes this with two simple building blocks: Topics (the themes you care about) and Snippets (the specific highlights you tuck into them).

How to Set It Up Cluing for Newsletters

Step 1: Create Your Topics πŸ“œ

Take five minutes and think about the handful of areas where newsletter insights actually stick for you - those become your Topics.

In marketing, that might be "Content Strategy," "Distribution," and "Copywriting." If you're a founder, maybe "Fundraising," "Hiring," and "Product." There's no wrong answer, and you can always add more later.

πŸ’‘ Do yourself a favor and start with just one Topic - the thing you read about most. Fill it up for a few weeks, then branch out. Setting up eight empty Topics before you've saved a single Snippet is the classic rookie move (we've all done it).

Step 2: Create a Dedicated Email Address and Subscribe With It πŸ“©

Each Topic can have its own unique email address, and this is the heart of the newsletter workflow.

  1. Open Workspace settings.

  2. Go to the Emails section.

  3. Click to add a new email and choose the Topic.

  4. The system generates a unique address. Copy it.

Now use that address to subscribe to the newsletters you love. Instead of piling up in your personal inbox, every new issue quietly arrives in Cluing, gets processed, and is filed as a snippet in the right Topic - all on its own, no forwarding or copy-pasting required. Set it once and forget it.

πŸ’‘ Already subscribed with your personal email? No problem! You can forward individual issues to the Topic address too. But subscribing directly is the smoothest path, since every future issue just keeps flowing in.

πŸ“Œ The number of email addresses depends on your plan:

  • Free: 1 active email address.

  • Personal Pro & Team - multiple addresses for different Topics.

Step 3: Read in Reader and Highlight What Matters πŸ“–

Once a newsletter lands, open it in the Cluing Reader - a clean, calm view with none of the email clutter, just the words.

  • From a snippet, click the three-dot menu and choose Open in Reader, or

  • Click Reader in the left sidebar of your dashboard.

Read the way you always do, but with one small new habit: when a line makes you go "oh, that's good" - highlight it. Cluing turns that highlight into its own Snippet, linked back to the source. You're keeping the paragraph that earned its place, not the whole newsletter.

πŸ’‘ Always Add a Short Note

A highlight on its own is just a floating quote. So jot down a quick comment on the Snippet - a line or two about why it caught your eye or how you might use it. It takes ten seconds now, and future-you will be grateful in six months when the memory's gone but the note isn't.

Step 4: Let Your Topics Grow

Here's the part that feels a little magical: it compounds.

A Topic that starts with three Snippets from one newsletter becomes, a few months in, a curated collection of 40-50 ideas from a dozen sources, all on the same theme, all searchable, all carrying your context. You barely notice it happening, and then one day it's there.

Put Your Knowledge Base to Work with AI Chat πŸ€–

Saving is only half the fun - the real payoff is pulling the right idea out at the right moment. Cluing's AI Chat lets you just ask your own saved content, in plain language.

  1. Open Chat from your dashboard.

  2. Type @ and select the Topic you want to use as context.

  3. Ask your question, for example:

    • "What have I saved about email subject lines?"

    • "Summarize the key ideas in my @Growth Tactics topic."

    • "I'm writing about onboarding - what snippets are relevant?"

Cluing searches through everything saved inside that Topic and grounds the AI's answer in your curated research, not just the open internet.

Turn a Conversation Into a Document with Canvas

Open Canvas and your conversation becomes a working document you can draft in directly. When you're done, you can save it back into a Topic as a structured snippet.

Tips to Make the System Stick

  • Subscribe once, capture forever. Point your newsletter subscriptions at the Topic address so every future issue is saved automatically - no per-email effort.

  • One highlight per "aha moment." Don't highlight everything - just the sentence that sparked something. Brevity keeps Snippets useful.

  • Review your Topics monthly. Ten minutes scanning what you've saved surfaces connections you missed while reading.

  • Start with one Topic. Fill it up before expanding.

Extend Beyond Newsletters

Once the habit is in place, the same system grows naturally:

  • Browser extension - Save highlights from any web article to a Topic without leaving the page.

  • PDF uploads - Upload reports, whitepapers, and long reads, then highlight inside the Reader.

  • Mobile sharing - Share something from your phone straight into the right Topic.

  • Shared Topics - Collaborate with a colleague on the same theme so your knowledge base grows twice as fast.

The Result After 30 Days

Give it a month of subscribing and highlighting, and something shifts. You stop digging through your inbox. When you sit down to write or prep for a meeting, you just open the right Topic and your research is already waiting for you, curated, annotated, and ready to go.

The best part? You didn't add more work to your day. The reading you were already doing finally starts working for you. 🌟
